Welcoming World Mangrove Day 2026, PLN Indonesia Power Strengthens Mangrove Conservation through Collaboration with Prof. Emil Salim
Jakarta, July 21, 2026 – In celebration of World Mangrove Day, which is observed on July 26, PT PLN Indonesia Power, through its Bali Generation Business Unit (UBP Bali), organized a Mangrove Sharing Session with Prof. Dr. Emil Salim, one of Indonesia’s leading environmental figures and former Minister of Environment (1978–1993).
The event was attended by PLN Indonesia Power Corporate Secretary Agung Siswanto, Senior Manager of PLN Indonesia Power UBP Bali I Made Harta Yasa and his team, CSR Manager Elza Febrianto, Head of Segara Guna Batu Lumbang Community Business Group (KUB) I Wayan Kona Antara, representatives of the Emil Salim Foundation, and other stakeholders committed to protecting coastal ecosystems.
The sharing session served as a platform for collaboration and knowledge exchange on the importance of mangrove conservation in addressing climate change, protecting coastal areas, and improving community welfare through sustainable environmental programs. Through this initiative, PLN Indonesia Power aims to strengthen cooperation among businesses, local communities, academics, and environmental organizations to preserve Bali’s mangrove ecosystem.
The program also aimed to increase public understanding of the environmental and economic value of mangrove forests, encourage community participation in mangrove restoration, strengthen community empowerment programs, and support sustainable development goals as well as Indonesia’s transition toward a low-carbon future.
During the session, Prof. Dr. Emil Salim praised PLN Indonesia Power for consistently integrating environmental sustainability into its business operations.
"Mangroves are a natural shield that protects Bali’s coastline from erosion, strong waves, and the impacts of climate change. They not only preserve coastal ecosystems but also support local livelihoods through fisheries, tourism, and economic growth, which in turn contributes to higher energy demand. I highly appreciate PLN Indonesia Power for its successful environmental conservation efforts and for developing the Batu Lumbang Ecotourism Area, which has improved the local community’s economy," said Prof. Emil Salim.
He also emphasized that protecting mangrove ecosystems requires collaboration among all stakeholders.
"Successful mangrove conservation cannot be achieved by one party alone. It requires cooperation between the government, businesses, academics, and local communities to ensure these ecosystems remain healthy and continue providing environmental, social, and economic benefits for Indonesia’s coastal areas," he added.
Meanwhile, PLN Indonesia Power CSR Manager Elza Febrianto stated that mangrove conservation is an important part of the company's commitment to sustainable business practices and Indonesia’s energy transition.
"A company's success is not measured only by its operational performance, but also by its contribution to environmental protection and community development. Through collaboration with the Segara Guna Batu Lumbang Community Business Group, the Emil Salim Foundation, and other stakeholders, we want to ensure that our mangrove conservation programs create long-term benefits for both the environment and coastal communities," said Elza.
She also expressed hope that the event would inspire greater public awareness of the important role of mangroves as a nature-based solution to climate change.
"Mangroves have an exceptional ability to absorb carbon while protecting coastal areas from environmental threats. Conserving mangrove ecosystems is fully aligned with PLN Indonesia Power’s commitment to supporting Indonesia’s decarbonization goals and promoting inclusive, low-carbon, and sustainable development," she added.
