PLTU Pangkalan Susu and ITB Conduct CCS Feasibility Study to Support Energy Transition
Pangkalan Susu, August 8, 2025 — PT PLN Indonesia Power (PLN IP) has partnered with Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) to conduct a feasibility study on the application of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology at one of its business units in North Sumatra, PLTU Pangkalan Susu. This initiative reflects PLN’s strategic commitment to supporting the national energy transition and reducing carbon emissions in the power sector.
The study began with a site visit by ITB experts to PLTU Pangkalan Susu from August 4–6, 2025. The visit included plant inspections, technical discussions, and data collection to form the basis of a comprehensive assessment on the potential implementation of CCS.
As one of the key power plants in North Sumatra, PLTU Pangkalan Susu is considered to hold strong potential as a pilot site for CCS implementation in coal-based generation. CCS technology enables the capture and storage of carbon emissions from combustion processes, significantly reducing emissions while maintaining reliable electricity supply.
The study covers technical, operational, economic, and environmental aspects. Key topics include steam requirements, CO₂ emission intensity, pipeline routes, and identification of potential sites for CCS application.
Bernadus Sudarmanta, President Director of PLN Indonesia Power, emphasized that this initiative demonstrates the company’s commitment to delivering cleaner and more sustainable power plants.
“We believe that collaboration with academic institutions like ITB will accelerate the national energy transition toward Net Zero Emission. CCS is not only a technical solution but also a symbol of innovation and environmental responsibility that we uphold,” he stated.
He further added:
“PLN Indonesia Power continues to open avenues for cross-sector collaboration to ensure that every step toward decarbonization is measurable, efficient, and brings tangible benefits for the future of Indonesia’s energy.”
The outcomes of this study will provide the foundation for technical design planning, cost estimation, and long-term implementation strategies. PLN Indonesia Power remains open to collaboration with academia, government, and international partners to accelerate progress toward the Net Zero Emission target.
