Keeping Sulawesi Bright During the Christmas and New Year Holidays: The Strategic Role of PLN Indonesia Power UBP Tello
Makassar, 11 January 2026 — Following the Christmas and New Year (Nataru) standby period, PT PLN Indonesia Power, through its Generation Business Unit (UBP) Tello, confirmed the successful maintenance of electricity supply reliability across the Sulawesi region. Through the optimization of all generation assets and full personnel readiness, UBP Tello effectively ensured a secure and stable power supply, allowing the public to celebrate the holiday season safely and comfortably. This achievement reflects the strong commitment of the state-owned enterprise to delivering reliable electricity services during peak demand periods.
PLN Indonesia Power operates a number of power plants across various regions and electricity systems, including the Tello Diesel Power Plant (PLTD) and Gas Turbine Power Plant (PLTG) in Makassar City. These facilities serve as key backbones of the South Sulawesi (Sulbagsel) Power System, particularly during large-scale outages. Equipped with black start capability on the 150 kV network, PLTD and PLTG Tello play a critical role in the anti-blackout scheme, enabling fast, controlled, and secure system recovery during the Nataru period.
In Kolaka Regency, BMPP Nusantara II, which is connected to the Southeast Sulawesi Power System, also played a strategic role. Throughout the standby period, BMPP Nusantara II served as the sole electricity supply for priority customers, including high-voltage customers (KTT), in the event of disturbances along the 150 kV transmission line.
In the island regions, PLTD Selayar functioned as the only electricity supply source within the Selayar Islands Power System, ensuring service continuity for local communities during the year-end holidays. In addition, Selayar is supported by a Solar Power Plant (PLTS), providing environmentally friendly renewable energy in line with the Company’s commitment to Net Zero Emissions and the enhancement of the clean energy mix. The combined operation of PLTD and PLTS Selayar contributed to system reliability and operational efficiency throughout the standby period.
At the conclusion of the 2024/2025 Nataru standby period, the management of UBP Tello expressed appreciation for the dedication and performance of all personnel, while reaffirming its commitment to maintaining high reliability standards during critical periods. Through strengthened equipment monitoring, 24-hour operational readiness, and solid cross-unit coordination, PLN Indonesia Power UBP Tello successfully navigated the Christmas 2025 and New Year 2026 standby period. This success serves as a strong foundation to address future challenges and to ensure Sulawesi remains bright, safe, and comfortable for all customers.
