Ahead of Christmas and New Year, PLN Indonesia Power Inaugurates Tanjung Selor Gas Power Plant 20 MW: Strengthening the Electricity System of North Kalimantan

Tanjung Selor, December 20, 2025 – As the generation subholding of PT PLN (Persero), PLN Indonesia Power (PLN IP), together with its subsidiary PLN Indonesia Power Services, officially commenced operations of the Tanjung Selor Gas Power Plant (PLTG) with a capacity of 20 MW. This strategic step strengthens the reliability of the electricity system in North Kalimantan, addresses the growing demand for electricity, and supports regional economic growth, particularly ahead of the Christmas 2025 and New Year 2026 standby period. The Tanjung Selor PLTG is the result of the relocation of Unit 2 PLTG Sambera, East Kalimantan, carried out by PLN Indonesia Power Services since January 2025.

The relocation is part of a strategy to optimize generation assets for more effective utilization aligned with regional system needs. The process was conducted in a planned and integrated manner, covering civil works, dismantling, transportation of main equipment, reassembly, testing, and commissioning. The project involved hundreds of personnel and was successfully completed with a zero-accident record, reflecting a strong commitment to safety and quality.

With the additional 20 MW capacity, the Tanjung Selor PLTG provides significant support to the electricity system of North Kalimantan, located at the edge of the grid. The plant is designed to operate reliably, stably, and responsively, enabling it to sustain peak loads and ensure secure electricity supply for communities, public services, and the regional economy.

Purnomo, Director of Gas Power Plant Operations at PLN Indonesia Power, expressed appreciation for the success of this project:
"The relocation of PLTG Sambera to Tanjung Selor is a strategic achievement we should all be grateful for. I commend the hard work of PLN IP Services, which has been professional and solution-oriented. This project not only strengthens the reliability of the electricity system in North Kalimantan but also demonstrates the capability of PLN IP Services personnel in managing generation projects comprehensively," said Purnomo.

Hari Cahyono, President Director of PLN Indonesia Power Services, emphasized the collaborative commitment undertaken by PLN IPS:
"The inauguration of the Tanjung Selor PLTG is an important milestone for us. The relocation was completed through planned and collaborative work with a zero-accident record. Going forward, PLN IP Services is ready to operate this plant reliably to strengthen the electricity system of North Kalimantan and deliver tangible benefits to the community," he stated.

In line with this, Firman Ramdan, Manager of PLN Indonesia Power UBP Mahakam, affirmed that the readiness of the Tanjung Selor PLTG had been comprehensively prepared, from technical aspects to human resources. This step reflects the company’s responsibility to ensure safe and sustainable electricity supply to support community activities and regional economic growth.

"We ensure that the 20 MW Tanjung Selor PLTG is ready to operate optimally to maintain electricity supply that is safe, stable, and sustainable. This is PLN Indonesia Power’s commitment to supporting North Kalimantan’s energy needs, especially during the Christmas and New Year standby period," explained Firman.

The inauguration ceremony was marked by the signing of a commemorative plaque by the Director of Gas Power Plant Operations of PLN Indonesia Power, witnessed by the President Director of PLN Indonesia Power Services, VP OMP V, Manager of PLN Indonesia Power UBP Mahakam, Manager of UP3 Kaltara, and the PLN Group management team. Beyond infrastructure strengthening, PLN Indonesia Power also demonstrated social care by providing donations to orphans and underprivileged individuals, underscoring that the presence of the power plant not only brings light to the electricity system but also carries humanitarian value for surrounding communities.
